The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) is set to disseminate its report on the 2023 Nigerian elections on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
The purpose of the webinar is to provide a platform for the Network to share its learnings with other civil society organizations and the public including the media and institutions working on elections and election-related issues.
The webinar would be livestreamed on our social media platforms – YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter – in English, French, and Portuguese languages.
Nigeria held its national elections on February 25, 2023. The election is the first of three national elections in the ECOWAS sub-region — the other two are in Liberia and Sierra Leone — that the West Africa Democracy Solidarity (WADEMOS) Network will closely monitor. The Nigerian election was the sixth consecutive presidential election held in the country since its return to multiparty democracy in 1999.
In a solidarity mission to Nigeria from January 24–27, the Network engaged key stakeholders in the country, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Peace Committee of Nigeria, the National Human Rights Committee of Nigeria (NHRC), the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC-Nigeria), and ECOWAS.
Furthermore, the Network deployed a technical team to monitor the February 25 national elections and learn from Nigeria’s electoral processes, as the outcome has consequences for the sub-region. Led by Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, the Technical Advisor to the Network, the WADEMOS election observation team comprised Network members from the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD) in Liberia, and the National Elections Watch (NEW) in Sierra Leone.
The Network, based on its pre- and post-election observations, is organizing the Webinar to present its observations, findings, and lessons and recommendations for future elections in West Africa to the public, CSOs and other institutions working in the elections space.
