Tidjane Thiam has been re-elected as head of the country’s main opposition party just days after resigning from the role.
Thiam, who has faced legal hurdles since announcing his intention to run for president during the October polls, stepped down as leader of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire – African Democratic Rally on Sunday. The 62-year-old was removed from the electoral roll after a court ruled that he forfeited his Ivorian citizenship when he became a citizen of France.
Analysts have said the court’s decision, which is not subject to appeal, may close the door on Thiam’s presidential candidacy.
