New Release: WADEMOS Inception Launch Report

The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network was launched on September 16, 2022, in Accra, Ghana, on the theme “Countering Threats to Democracy in West Africa.”

Countering the threats to democratic governance requires collective actions by both state and non-state actors, including regional and supranational organizations. Consequently, many interventions have been initiated by regional bodies such as the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) and the Africa Union (AU) and complemented by civil society organizations (CSOs) to reverse the trend of democratic decline, yet progress has been slow.

It is in the above context that the West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) was formed with the primary purpose of harnessing opportunities and resources within the region to respond effectively to the threats of democratic backsliding. The WADEMOS Network was launched in Accra as an initiative of the Ghana Centre for Democracy Development (CDD-Ghana) in collaboration with regional CSO partners—the West Africa Civil Society Initiative (WACSI), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).

As a transnational civil society network, WADEMOS brings together CSOs from across the ECOWAS Region, numbering about 35 at its inception, to build bridges of solidarity and common purpose.

The report encapsulates the discussions, proposals and ideas that were shared at the event and gives a comprehensive overview of the Network’s activities and thematic areas.
