The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) joins young people across West Africa and the world in commemorating International Youth Day 2026 under the United Nations theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
Across diverse contexts, young people in West Africa share common aspirations for dignity, opportunity, peace, freedom, decent livelihoods, and meaningful participation in decision-making.
Yet many young people continue to face political exclusion, unemployment, insecurity, and limited economic opportunities.
WADEMOS is particularly concerned about the continued pressures on civic space in parts of West Africa, including restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, attacks on journalists and civic actors, online harassment, disinformation and other practices that discourage young people from participating actively in public life.
These challenges are compounded by persistent conflict, violent extremism, political instability, organised crime and communal tensions, which disproportionately affect young people, especially in border and rural areas
WADEMOS calls on governments and regional institutions to safeguard fundamental freedoms and ensure an environment where young people can organise, express themselves and participate without fear of intimidation or reprisal. Democracy is not inclusive when young people are underrepresented in decision-making. Youth participation must therefore go beyond symbolic inclusion to meaningful influence in governance, policy and institutions at national and regional level.
The Network also urges greater investment in youth-led peacebuilding, conflict prevention, early warning and early response, with young people recognised as key partners in national and regional peace and security efforts.
In addition, the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader regional integration must translate into real economic opportunities for young people as entrepreneurs, innovators, producers and professionals.
WADEMOS reaffirms its commitment to working with young people to advance a more democratic, inclusive, peaceful and prosperous West Africa, and is particularly proud to recognize and celebrate our Next Generation Fellows who are contributing to the advancement of democracy, civic participation, peace and regional integration across West Africa.
