WADEMOS engages ECOWAS on State of Democracy in West Africa

The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) has engaged ECOWAS, the sub-regional bloc, in a productive dialogue to strengthen democracy and governance in West Africa.

Democracy in West Africa is confronted by numerous challenges, requiring collaboration among stakeholders to counter the threats. To strengthen democracy and governance in West Africa, WADEMOSnetwork, as a transnational organization, held talks with ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria, on the political situation in the sub-region and to discuss some proposed interventions.

As part of WADEMOS’ interactions with the ECOWAS, a Democracy and Development Fellow at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr. John Osae-Kwapong presented findings of a sub-regional democracy risk assessment on behalf of the Network.

The assessment is part of WADEMOS’ proposed mechanisms to build a strong early warning system for the region. The evaluation measures various indicators using data from credible sources, including Afrobarometer to develop trends and determine the state of democracy in West Africa.

Following the closed-door dialogue, both parties pledged to have more fruitful deliberations and committed to working together to improve the quality of democracy in the sub-region.
