Civil Society Organizations in West Africa Embark on Pre-election Mission to Ghana

The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS), in partnership with the West Africa Election Observation Network (WAEON), will embark on a solidarity mission to Ghana from Monday, October 7, to Friday, October 11, 2024, ahead of the country’s general elections on December 7, 2024.

The pre-election mission follows similar successful activities in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia (2023), and Senegal (2024), helping to enhance local civil society participation in observing the elections, monitoring pre-election processes, and ensuring transparent outcomes. This activity further seeks to strengthen solidarity among civil society and pro-democracy actors in West Africa and contribute to improving the quality and credibility of elections in the sub-region.

The five-member delegation is hosted by the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), and Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), a member of the WADEMOS Network. The delegation comprises: James Lahai, the National Coordinator of National Election Watch (Sierra Leone) and Chairperson of the West Africa Elections Observers Network (WAEON); Alioune Tine, Executive Director of Afrikajom (Senegal) and Independent Expert on Human Rights with the United Nations; Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programs, Yiaga Africa (Nigeria); Dan Torkamawon Saryee, Executive Director of the Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD-Liberia); and  Marr Nyang, Executive Director of Gambia Decides (The Gambia).
