The Gambia government has announced the publication of a new draft constitution, three years after the original version was first introduced in Parliament but rejected.
The majority of MPs from the ruling National People’s Party and their allies in the national assembly opposed the draft, claiming they were unhappy with some parts. The constitution had provisions on term limits and a description of The Gambia as ‘a secular state’.
The MPs rejected these provisions, contending that the draft did not reflect the will and wishes of Gambians.
