Report on Women’s Voices in a Patriarchal Society – Changing the Narrative

The “Rapport sur la Voix des Femmes dans une Société Patriarcale – Changez le Récit” is a product of Réseau Femmes Leaders pour le Développement (RFLD), WADEMOS Network member in Benin.

The report focuses on the following countries: Benin, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Niger, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Gabon, Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

One of Africa’s biggest problems is the absence of women’s voices in the spheres of power and decision-making. In many countries, for example, low participation is a culture. This mixed representation of women is usually the result of cultural attitudes that are based on tradition and are tacitly applied in political groupings. It is clear, then, that an enabling environment must be provided for the effective participation of men and women if we are to equalize voices in our institutions.

This report analyzes the causes of the low presence of women in these decision-making spheres and presents solutions for change. The advocacy we propose is in line with the RFLD’s goals of enabling an environment of equitable rights for all.

The 56-page report is only available in French.
